TRANSPLANTOLOGY IN TURKEY
Turkey is among the
top 3 countries with the most developed organ transplantation field. Transplantology is offered in many leading Turkish clinics. Turkish medical institutions possess modern equipment and a staff of specialists with many years of experience. One clinic in Antalya conducts more kidney transplants per year than countries such as Sweden, and twice as many as in Norway.
Organ Transplant conducted in the Turkish clinics such as
Memorial, Medical Park, Medicana, Liv Istinye is of the highest level and can be compared to the level of some of the American medical institutions. In terms of certain organs transplantation, Turkey is the world leader. For example, the percentage of 5-year survival after kidney transplantation at the Medical Park Clinic reaches
95.7% (in America,
89.4%).
All Turkish clinics operating in the area of organ transplantation have special permits from the Turkish Ministry of Health. Memorial Hospital, Medical Park, Medicana and Liv Isinye are also accredited by the
Joint International Commission. The transplant departments of the clinics are equipped with modern sterile surgical boxes, which virtually eliminates the risk of the patient being infected which is a major danger in transplanting an organ.
Prices for transplantation in Turkey are 2 times lower than in Germany and Israel.
There are some other features of transplantology in Turkey. Every year the list of organ transplants increases and local Turkish citizens occupying this list exceed the figure of 22 thousand. For this reason and according to the national legislation, organ transplantation for foreign patients is possible only from a related donor. However, Turkey is one of the few countries where it is allowed to perform organ transplantation from a related donor up to
4th generation (children of second cousins). In addition, donors may be members of the spouse’s family. For comparison: in Europe, transplantation is carried out only from parents and siblings.
To get permission for an organ transplant, all patients
undergo an ethical commission. Depending on the chosen clinic and the individual situation of the patient - the commission may be paid or free.
