Thanks to this project, 28 patients received bone marrow in 2015, 194 patients in 2016, 318 patients in 2017, and 461 patients in 2018, for a total of 1001 bone marrow transplants.

One of the bone marrow transplantation centers in Turkey is located in the Hisar Intercontinental Hospital. This department is designed for 20 patients, where hematologists, chemotherapists, radiologists and other specialists participate in the treatment. Single patient rooms are equipped in accordance with international health standards.

TURKISH SURGEONS CONDUCTED UNIQUE OPERATIONS

In 2018, Turkish surgeons performed several operations that were a breakthrough in their field. When a girl from Ukraine was diagnosed with glioma of the brain stem, doctors at the local clinic prescribed medication, which led to an even more serious condition. The only chance for the child was to have a surgical resection of the neoplasm, but because of its complex location, the doctors refused to do surgery. Only a neurosurgeon from the Turkish clinic Medical ParkProf.Dr. Serdar Baki Albayrak agreed to remove glioma through surgery. He successfully removed part of the brain stem tumor.

Turkish surgeons under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Özer Makayi from the University of the Aegean shared their experience with doctors from Azerbaijan. They performed a thyroid gland removal through the oral cavity (transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy). During the operation, there is no need to make external cuts, with the help of video endoscopic equipment, the procedure is performed with maximum accuracy – this guarantees the patient a quick recovery and no complications. Two years ago, such operation in Turkey was impossible. Today, Turkish doctors travel around the countries and train local surgeons – they have already been to Bulgaria and Georgia, are planning a trip to Poland and Switzerland.

In 2018, Turkish scientists from the University of Uludag announced the completion of work on a medication for the treatment of bowel cancer.

The idea to create a medicine was the dissertation of Dr. Jade Ichsel – the research became the basis for the further actions of specialists.

Veysel Turan Yılmaz, project manager, announced that the tool has already been patented. Negotiations are underway with pharmaceutical companies.

According to Konstantinos Dimas from the University of Thessaly in Greece, tests show the significant benefits of the drug.

Unlike other similar drugs, the Turkish medicine quickly reduces the size of tumors in mice and has fewer side effects. Scientists believe that the drug they have developed is a promising and safer agent for the treatment of cancer.

TURKISH SCHOOLBOYS MADE INNOVATIVE BREAKTHROUGH

Along with major research centers and universities in Turkey, young people are also developing unique devices that can make life easier for many patients. So, in 2018, students of the Anatolian Vocational School, 17-year-old Ibrahim Yayi and 18-year-old Haroon Istendzhi, completed the development of a device for people with hand tremor. This is a special handle that helps hold cutlery in your hand. It is fixed on the handle of a spoon or fork, and with the help of a sensor and a motor, the device is stabilized, which allows it to be held in the presence of uncontrollable trembling of hands. Young inventors have been included in the list of applicants for the Fatih Project education award.

An year earlier, schoolgirls Leyla Al-Masud and Berna Akdeniz from Izmir presented their own invention to the world for the early diagnosis of oncological diseases, for which they were awarded in 2017 with the SciChallenge prize in science competition. These girls created two microfluidic chips that are able to detect breast, lung and prostate cancer in the early stages. To do this, simply place a sample of the patient’s fluid into the device.
