About the doctor
Barış Akin graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and took part in a transplant fellowship programme at Ohio State University between 2001 and 2004. He specialises in kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as advanced laparoscopic kidney transplantation procedures. The professor is certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He received the ‘Young Investigator Award’ in 2004 at the American Transplant Conference.
Barış Akin returned to Istanbul in 2004 and established one of the first kidney transplant programmes at Florence Nightingale Hospital. He performed the first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy in Turkey.
The professor has performed retroperitoneoscopic donor nephrectomies in over 400 cases without any serious complications. He has presented his surgical experience at international conferences in the USA and Europe. Barış Akin performed over 500 kidney transplant operations whilst training in Turkey, with a success rate of 95–97% in the first year.
The doctor is currently President of the Turkish Society of Vascular Access and Director of the Kidney Transplant Programme at the Florence Nightingale University Hospital in Istanbul.
