The Shaare Zedek Medical Center is a private non-profit organization operating thanks to charitable donations and not receiving funding from the state budget. Practical and scientific research activities of the clinic occur through funds from patients care and voluntary contributions from different people around the world. The diversified clinical center of Shaare Zedek is distinguished by the work of the emergency department and resuscitation, which was fully manifested during the attacks in Jerusalem.

Shaare Zedek is positioned as a research center for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Collaboration with the medical faculty stimulates scientific research, promotes the creation of new and improved existing methods of training future doctors, as well as improving the treatment quality of patients.

In 2019, Shaare Zedek Medical Centre performed approximately 36,000 surgical procedures, including more than 1,000 open and minimally invasive brain surgeries and 3,400 cardiac catheterisations. The main areas of focus at the medical centre are cardiology, oncology, urology, genetics, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, reproductive medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Shaare Zedek has a little over 5,000 medical staff (doctors, nurses, medical workers, administrative and service personnel), including many international doctors and nurses who participate in clinical trials to develop innovative treatment methods.

The hospital's specialists have many years of experience in treating a wide range of traumatic and emergency medical conditions. They are prepared to provide rapid and effective treatment for accidents. In 2016, the clinic opened a Centre for the Treatment of Brain Injuries, which enables optimal treatment of head injuries.

During terrorist attacks, the medical centre strengthened its historical ties with the Israel Defence Forces. Today, more than 12,000 military personnel are treated here. The hospital also cooperates with the Israel Defence Forces on emergency preparedness issues. Shaare Zedek has been declared a regional centre for the treatment of victims of chemical and biological warfare.

Advantages of Treatment at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre

  • The hospital is considered to be one of the oldest in Israel (opened in 1902). The name is literally translated from Hebrew as "The Gate of Justice" – in a way this is the motto of the clinic – helping every person regardless of nationality, race or religious affiliation.

Cardiology Department of Shaare Zedek Hospital

Thanks to the cardiosurgical department, the hospital is considered one of the leading institutions in Israel for the surgical treatment of coronary heart disease by coronary artery bypass grafting, and valvular heart disease in adults of all ages. The specialists there perform more than 2,000 coronarographies yearly.

Since 2008, they have been performing non-surgical implantation of an aortic valve by introducing an artificial valve through the femoral artery or usinh a transapical method. This technique saves lives of people suffering from severe aortic valve contraction, for whom open-heart surgery is unavaliable due to high risk. The Department of Neurosurgery at the Shaare Tzedek Medical Center diagnoses and treats diseases related to the nervous system. They use advanced techniques to maintain and restore brain and spinal cord functions.

Treatment is carried out by a team of neurosurgeons who have been trained in world's leading institutions to work with innovative technologies. The department is prepared to treat severe head injuries, complex brain tumors, degenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as normal pressure hydrocephaly, and other disorders.

The department's operating room is equipped with the latest model of visualisation technology, ultrasound and a surgical robot that allows performing procedures such as tumor tissue biopsy with extreme accuracy.

In the OB-GYN department at the Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center more than 20,000 births are conducted annually. Professor Arnon Samueloff - the head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, is a member of the medical committee in Shaare Zedek. His department is rightfully considered the most busiest in Israel, taking over 20,000 births a year. Thanks to the efforts of the professor, the department takes the leading position in the country in the field of surgical and oncological gynecology, as well as IVF.
In 1992 he completed his specialization in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of San Antonio, Texas. In 1995 he was appointed director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center. In addition to managing this department, Professor Samueloff also leads other departments both inside and outside the medical center, being a specialist in gestational diabetes.
Between 1998 and 2001, he served as chairman of the Israeli Society for Maternal and Fetal Medicine. He won national and international recognition for outstanding research work and is the author of more than 200 articles.
The professor acted as the head of more than ten doctoral dissertations for medical students. Teaches at the University. Ben-Gurion in the Negev and in 2004 received the title of professor.

The clinic is located in the heart of Jerusalem. On the territory of the complex (which consists of 10 buildings interconnected by junctions), there are schools for nurses and children (who need to be constantly in the hospital), cafeterias, souvenir shops, a hotel, a bank, and a patient care organization. The hospital is designed for 500 patient beds. In order to provide the better care for all who are there to help, only one person is allowed to accompany the patient.
