About the doctor
Efrat Levi-Lahad, MD, PhD, is a professor of internal medicine and medical genetics at the Hebrew University and director of the Institute of Medical Genetics at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem. She is one of the world’s leading experts on hereditary breast cancer among Jewish women.
Dr Levi-Lahad obtained her medical degree from the Hadassah Medical School of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem and undertook a three-year fellowship in medical genetics at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Since 1996, she has been Director of the Institute of Medical Genetics and a Senior Consultant at the Faculty of Medicine, Shaare Zedek Medical Centre.
Professor Levi-Lahad’s clinical laboratory specialises in cancer genetics diagnostics and offers a comprehensive pre-implantation genetic diagnosis service. Her research laboratory focuses on the genetics of breast cancer, in particular the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, as well as the genetic and environmental factors that influence the risk associated with these mutations. She investigates the application of genetic testing in population-based screening and large-scale preventive measures.
Professor Levi-Lahad is actively involved in the bioethical aspects of genetic research and currently serves as co-chair of Israel’s National Bioethics Council. She is a member of the Israeli National Council for Women’s Health and the National Council for Gynaecology, Perinatal Medicine and Genetics. At international level, she served as a member of UNESCO’s IBC (International Bioethics Committee) (2006–2009)
