Structure of the University General Hospital of Catalonia

The hospital offers:

  • 10 beds in neonatal pathology;
  • 4 beds in pediatric intensive care;
  • 8 operating rooms for general purposes;
  • 2 delivery rooms;
  • 4 operating rooms for outpatient surgery;
  • 2 rooms for vascular operations;
  • 127 general care rooms;
  • 7 rehabilitation rooms.

The hospital has accommodation for 310 patients. Also, the medical center has its own parking with a capacity of 400 cars. Patients are accommodated both in double wards and in individual wards. They have everything you need for a comfortable stay: a comfortable bed, a TV, a bathroom with a shower, etc. Also, spacious suites (28 m2) were put into operation at the University Hospital of Catalonia. They are located on the first floor of the hospital and are equipped with large sofas, two bathrooms and air conditioning.

Treatment of Breast Cancer in University General Hospital of Catalonia

This department operates in close cooperation with other units such as gynecology, X-ray diagnostics, medical oncology, radiation oncology and plastic surgery, offering, in addition to the necessary medical methods of treatment, modern methods of diagnosing breast cancer:

  • mammography;
  • ultrasound examination;
  • directed or stereotactic biopsy;
  • radical and conservative surgery;
  • immediate or delayed reconstructive surgery in collaboration with plastic surgery;
  • partial or radical mastectomy with / without dissection of the axillary lymph nodes or with replacement of the prosthesis, where necessary;

Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department

Specialists in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology treat virtually all diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Most often, patients come here who need help in treating tumours of the musculoskeletal system, diabetic foot, as well as pathologies of the hip, knee, hands, feet and spine. Dr Joaquim Casañas Sintes works here. He has a European title in hand surgery and performs surgical treatment of the peripheral nerves of the brachial plexus, which is unique in Spain. In January 2020, Dr. Casanas' team, together with the neurology department of the General University Hospital of Catalonia, performed the first nerve transplant in Spain from the lower limb to the cervical spine in a patient with spinal cord injury (C4 level), complete tetraplegia and severe disability.

This surgical intervention was aimed at restoring flexion-extension movements of the elbow and wrist extension function, which had been paralysed for many years. After the transplant, the patient began a course of rehabilitation under the supervision of doctors from the neurology and rehabilitation department to restore the function of the paralysed limbs.

Cardiological Department of University General Hospital of Catalonia

University General Hospital of Catalonia has the latest generation equipment that allows doctors to identify and treat cardiological diseases such as: arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial diseases, etc. For the treatment of patients, open surgery is contraindicated on the heart, in the clinic using minimally invasive surgery. The cardiology and cardiac surgery departments at the University Clinic of Catalonia perform:

  • coronary diagnostic studies (CT, MSCT);
  • implantation of stents with and without drug coating;
  • scheduled and emergency angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction;

Treatment of Symptomatic Aortic Stenosis in University General Hospital of Catalonia

For the treatment of aortic valve stenosis, doctors of the clinic use the modern method of vascular surgery – TAVI. With this disease, the valve narrows, which separates the heart from aorta, and due to this, an additional load is placed on the heart when blood is pumped into the body. To restore the correct functioning of the heart, it is necessary to introduce a new valve, for which doctors use the method of aortic valve implantation by catheter.

During the TAVI procedure, there is no need to “stop” the heart, since the new valve is implanted due to the heartbeat. The advantages of this procedure consist in a shorter patient recovery period, as well as the possibilities of performing the operation in a category of patients with high risks of complications.

In 90% of cases, the operation is performed through the hip artery, moving the catheter from the groin to the heart. After positioning the valve, the doctor expands it, fixes it in the right place and removes the catheter. Sometimes implantation through the pelvic artery is unavailable due to the small diameter of the artery, in such cases the operation can be performed through the large artery in the thoracic region.
