Clinic Review

Catalunya University Hospital exterior

University General Hospital of Catalonia - Quironsalud Hospital Group has been providing medical services in more than 25 areas since 1984. Due to the high standards of treatment and the introduction of new protocols, the hospital was the first in Europe to receive the certificate of the Joint Commission International(JCI). In 2001, a project was launched here aimed at the constant modernization of equipment, which makes the hospital one of the most technologically advanced in the EU.

The University General Hospital of Catalonia is part of the Quironsalud Hospital Group represented in 8 European countries and has 16,000 specialists in its arsenal. In Spain, the Quiron group opened 22 medical institutions with more than 4,300 employees.

The University General Hospital of Catalonia is multidisciplinary, but there is a big bias in areas such as: oncology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and traumatology, surgery, pediatrics and cardiology. It offers patients more than 270 doctors and 460 nurses. It is worth noting that the University General Hospital of Catalonia is aware of the importance of developing and updating knowledge, therefore, employees regularly take advanced training courses. In addition, there is an exchange with other Quironsalud Hospital Group (both nationally and internationally), which allows specialists to compare information in other medical institutions of the group and exchange experience and knowledge.

The hospital building is located in the green zone, which creates a feeling of comfort and a positive effect on the psychological state of patients.

On the basis of the clinic, a branch of the Instituto Oncológico Dr. Rosell was opened. Physicians of the unit apply a comprehensive anti-cancer treatment with an innovative strategy: individual therapeutic models that are based on genetic analysis.

Dr. Rosell himself also practices at the University Hospital of Catalonia and specializes in the treatment of metastatic large cell lung cancer. Thanks to the research of Rafael Rosell and his team, patients have the opportunity to receive more individualized treatment for cancer, which increases the chances of fighting for quality of life. In 2013, The Lancet, one of the best-known, oldest and most reputable medical journals, recognized Dr. Rosell as the highest authority on lung cancer therapy in Europe.

The medical center operates and treats cancer of the thyroid gland, bladder, prostate gland, liver, as well as children's oncology, lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma, brain tumors, bones, etc.

CARDIOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT

University General Hospital of Catalonia has the latest generation equipment that allows doctors to identify and treat cardiological diseases such as: arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial diseases, etc. For the treatment of patients, open surgery is contraindicated on the heart, in the clinic using minimally invasive surgery.

TREATMENT OF SYMPTOMATIC AORTIC STENOSIS IN University General Hospital of Catalonia

Cardiology surgery at the Catalonya University Hospital

For the treatment of aortic valve stenosis, doctors of the clinic use the modern method of vascular surgery - TAVI. With this disease, the valve narrows, which separates the heart from aorta, and due to this, an additional load is placed on the heart when blood is pumped into the body. To restore the correct functioning of the heart, it is necessary to introduce a new valve, for which doctors use the method of aortic valve implantation by catheter.

During the TAVI procedure, there is no need to “stop” the heart, since the new valve is implanted due to the heartbeat. The advantages of this procedure consist in a shorter patient recovery period, as well as the possibilities of performing the operation in a category of patients with high risks of complications.

In 90% of cases, the operation is performed through the hip artery, moving the catheter from the groin to the heart. After positioning the valve, the doctor expands it, fixes it in the right place and removes the catheter. Sometimes implantation through the pelvic artery is unavailable due to the small diameter of the artery, in such cases the operation can be performed through the large artery in the thoracic region.

DEPARTMENT OF COLOPROCTOLOGY at University General Hospital of Catalonia

In this division, doctors perform diagnostics, treatment and subsequent monitoring of all diseases of the colon, rectum and anal canal, both in benign and malignant tumors. To make an accurate diagnosis, doctors actively cooperate with colleagues from gastroenterology, gynecology, urology (pelvic floor pathology), radiology, medical oncology and radiation therapy.

Here, specific ultrasound scans (endoanal and endorectal) and minimally invasive methods, such as laparoscopy and TEO-TEM, are used to diagnose and treat diseases, as well as modern alternative methods for the treatment of certain anal pathologies (HEMOBYE).

HYPERBARIC MEDICINE IN University General Hospital of Catalonia

University General Hospital of Catalonia is one of three facilities in Spain where you can undergo hyperbaric treatment. Only 30 countries in the world cooperate with the company that produces required equipment.

Here is what happens during hyperbaric procedure: the patient is put in a sealed container with 100% oxygen concentration. During the process, they are all the time supervised by the specialized doctor. Through air pressure manipulation in the camera, the oxygen becomes more transportable, and gets absorbed in blood and tissue quicker and easier. This triggers a chain of physiological changes that can bring great positive effects for many conditions.

In particular, this method is used for treatment of disease like multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, various ulcers, etc. It helps with recovery from strokes, treating radiotherapy-caused trauma, reduces the risk of amputation for patients with diabetic feet.

Hyperbaric procedure is also widely used in sports medicine.
