Teresa Macarulla obtained her medical degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. She was a consultant in the Gastrointestinal Tumours Unit of the Medical Oncology Department at the Vall d’Ebrón University Hospital from 2004 to 2016. Dr Macarulla is currently the principal investigator of the VHIO Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Tumours Group, led by Josep Tabernero, and is also a senior oncologist at the Quirón Barcelona Clinic.
Dr Macarulla is a co-author of several studies aimed at developing new anti-cancer molecules, particularly in the field of EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) inhibition, as mutations or hyperactivity in this receptor have been linked to the development of cancer. She specialises in new targeted treatments for gastrointestinal tumours, particularly colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancer.
