About the doctor
He graduated from medical school in 1985 and from the Faculty of Medicine at Ankara University. He began his training in cardiac surgery in 1985 at the Institute of Cardiology, Istanbul University.
In 1989, Belhhan Akpınar travelled to the Netherlands and worked for a time at St Anthony’s Hospital, after which he undertook a four-year training programme at OLV Hospital in Alst, Belgium. In 1994, he became a consultant cardiovascular surgeon at Florence Nightingale Hospital. Dr Akpınar became a professor at Istanbul Science University, Faculty of Medicine, Florence Nightingale Hospital, in 2006. He is also Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery.
Belhhan Akpınar specialises in adult cardiac surgery. His team at FNH performs approximately 1,500 cardiovascular procedures each year. He specialises in minimally invasive surgery for mitral valve disease and atrial fibrillation, as well as robotic cardiac surgery. He has over 130 published papers and has delivered 200 presentations. Belhhan is a member of the EACTS, STS, ISMICS and ESCTS.
