In 1986 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Düsseldorf.

- 1987 – worked at Tübingen University.
In addition to interventional cardiology, his main areas of research are nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopic diagnosis of congenital and acquired heart defects, as well as pathogenesis and therapy of pulmonary hypertension. For his research into the treatment of pulmonary hypertension by inhalation of nitrogen monoxide, he was awarded the German Heart Foundation Sponsorship Prize and the Arthur Schlossmann Prize from the Saxon-Thuring Society for Pediatrics.
