Prof. Dietrich W. Beelen

The Department of Transplantology at the Essen Clinic is headed by Professor Beelen since 2002 which is the largest transplantation center in Europe with nearly 4,000 allogeneic stem cell transplants and is considered one of the most experienced centers in the world. Professor Beelen received the Karl Heinrich-Bauer Medal for his work in the field of allogeneic stem cell transplantation. He made a great contribution to the improvement of the situation of patients with schizophrenic leukemia and strengthened the reputation of the treatment of oncology in Germany due to successful research in the field of stem cell transplantation. He has about 454 publications. Today, the professor develops and tests modified allogeneic stem cell preparations for patients without tissue-compatible donors, as well as innovative cell-therapeutic drugs. He is also the chairman of the German stem cell transplant registry. Professor also deals with benign hematologic systemic diseases and transplantation of patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells after a myoablative regimen (ie irreversibly destroying bone marrow function). He is engaged in research and practice of allogeneic stem cell transplantation with partially identical donors.
