MedAustron in Austria is one of the most advanced particle therapy centres in the world. Located near Vienna in Wiener-Neustadt, this medical centre is one of the few in Europe to offer a safe and effective alternative to radiation therapy. There are only six such facilities around the world. Over 1,000 patients are treated here per year. The clinic covers an area of 32,200 m2.

The medical centre offers proton and ion beam therapy. Their main advantage is greater safety. They produce fewer side effects, which is especially important in the treatment of cancer in children.

The MedAustron team consists of 180 employees from 18 different countries, including doctors, technicians from various disciplines, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiologists.

The clinic is equipped with a particle accelerator capable of accelerating micro-particles - protons and carbon ions - up to ⅔ light speed. For medical purposes, these particles are used to treat cancer. Proton therapy at the MedAustron centre has been carried out since 2016, and ion beam therapy - since 2019. The hospital is equipped with three rooms for the treatment of patients:

    Proton and ion beam therapy with a horizontal fixed radiator;

    Proton and ion beam therapy with horizontal and vertical fixed radiators;

    Proton therapy with a moving radiator (gantry).

Although the rooms differ in the mobility of the transmitter, they all have one thing in common: each of the three rooms is equipped with an innovative robotic positioning system.

The clinic carries out a large number of scientific research, including in the field of radiation oncology. The doctors at MedAustron work closely with the Medical University of Vienna, the Vienna University of Technology, the Institute for High Energy Physics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt and the Graz Medical University.

Cancer species that are treated at MedAustron

Proton or ion beam therapy is possible for any patient who has been recommended for radiotherapy by their oncologist. However, MedAustron equipment is not suitable for all types of oncology. In 2020-21, the clinic is going to install systems with which it will be possible to treat more types of cancer. Now the MedAustron centre accepts patients with:

Treatment at the MedAustron Medical Center is available for adults as well as children. It is possible to irradiate the tumour again after an unsuccessful course of radiation therapy. It is can be done no sooner than 12 months after the last irradiation, provided there is a good diagnostic prognosis.

Advantages of proton therapy versus radiation therapy

The clinic is built according to the strictest safety standards of Forster Sandwich Construction. Thanks to them, visitors to the clinic are 100% protected from the radiation of the equipment.

The appearance of the clinic is arranged with care for the welfare of patients. Interior is decorated with natural materials. Several green atriums deliver daylight to every room of the building. At the entrance to the clinic, there is a Japanese Garden, where patients can enjoy some peace and quiet. The pediatric ward is decorated in cheerful tones to make treatment not a scary experience, but an exciting one.

Treatment of cancer at MedAustron Medical Center

Due to the physical properties of protons and carbon ions, radiation that passes through the patient's body practically does not damage healthy tissues and concentrates on the destruction of the tumour. Proton/ ion beam therapy is, therefore, best suited for treating oncology of radiation-sensitive organs - the brain, spinal cord, eyes, liver and lungs.

The biological efficiency of carbon ions is about three times higher than that of protons. Ion beam therapy is particularly suitable for the treatment of bone and soft tissue cancers, slow-growing tumours, tumours adjacent to radiation-sensitive organs, oxygen-poor malignancies or local relapses after conventional radiation therapy.

The decisive factor in proton therapy is the exact location of the patient. For this purpose, MedAustron uses the world's first robotic ceiling positioning system specially developed for the medical field. This system allows patients to be positioned with an accuracy of up to half a millimetre and ensures that the patient remains in this position throughout the treatment. The robot can move in seven independent directions. Also, the treatment table can be rotated and tilted. The patient's position is checked 500 times per second. In this way, the procedure’s accuracy is assured.

Immediately before each treatment session, Imagine Ring System (IRS) is used to check the correct position of the patient. The IRS is installed on the patient table and consists of an X-ray tube and a detector. Components can move and rotate independently of each other. The IRS provides three-dimensional visualization of the tumour position.

The transmitter used at MedAusten Medical Center is equipped with the latest generation of pencil beam scanning technology. It consists of computer simulation of the tumour and layer by layer irradiation. This is the most advanced technology in proton therapy, which further enhances the accuracy and safety of the treatment.

Pediatric Oncology at MedAustron Medical Center

A large percentage of patients treated at MedAustron are children. The medical centre accepts patients of all ages. For this group of patients, proton and carbon ion therapy has special advantages. As the child's body is actively growing and developing, it is more vulnerable to the negative effects of radiation. There is a risk of hormonal disorders or second cancer in adulthood. Proton and ion beam therapy can reduce this risk.

Small children may find it difficult to lie still for a long time, so the procedure is performed under anaesthesia. This helps to make sure that the process will go correctly and safely. The procedure is performed by an experienced paediatrician anesthesiologist.

The ion beam is indicated to patients with inoperable osteoblastic sarcomas and inoperable soft tissue sarcomas.

The decision on treatment is made on an individual level. In most cases, children to whom the doctor has prescribed radiation therapy are good candidates for proton or ion beam therapy.

If there are specific protocols for proton therapy, doctors adhere to them. If such protocols do not exist, or if too few patients have been treated for this particular type of cancer, doctors can adapt the doses from the conventional radiotherapy protocols.

The treatment process at MedAustron Medical Center

Doctors from MedAustron Medical Center will contact the patient within two days after the application.

During the first interview, the patient will be able to discuss diagnostic results and treatment options with a specialist physician from MedAustron.

During the next five days, the clinic will contact the insurance company if the patient uses their services and will amount the exact cost of treatment.

During the first session, diagnostic CT and MRI scans are performed, which are necessary for the correct positioning of the patient during treatment. The necessary pillows and masks for the body fixation are also made.

Over the next 10 days, a team of oncologists, radiologists and technicians will carefully plan the patient's treatment.

The course of treatment itself can take from 2 to 9 weeks. Every day, the patient will need to visit the clinic. There will also be a weekly midline diagnostics to monitor the progress of treatment.

At the end of treatment, the patient undergoes a CT scan and an MRI scan to ensure that the procedure has been successful.
