Features of the Clinic

Aachen Clinic Oncology Centre

The Aachen Cancer Centre was founded in 2010. It cooperates with the oncology departments of the University Hospitals in Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf. The hospital is funded by the German Cancer Society.

In February 2012, the Aachen Cancer Centre was certified ISO 9001 for the first time. The following year, it received ONKOZERT certification from the German Cancer Society.

The centre regularly demonstrates a high success rate in cancer treatment. It ranks among the leading oncological institutions in Germany. Here, an interdisciplinary and personalised approach is taken. This ensures highly qualified treatment of malignant tumours of all organs and anatomical structures in the human body.

The centre's specialists carry out comprehensive examinations to make a diagnosis. This makes it possible to determine the type of tumour, its precise location and the extent to which the malignant process has spread.

A "second opinion" service is available. It plays a crucial role in choosing a treatment strategy.

Cancer entails a huge emotional shock for the patient and their family. In most cases, the patient cannot cope with it alone. For this reason, the centre provides psycho-oncological care. This is an essential part of cancer treatment.

Chemotherapy or radiotherapy can cause infertility. For this reason, the centre is committed to preserving patients' reproductive function. Many modern reproductive medicine methods are available here. For example:

  • administration of hormones to immobilise the ovaries;
  • cryopreservation of unfertilised oocytes;
  • hormonal stimulation by a follicular puncture;
  • in vitro fertilization with cryopreservation of fertilized eggs;
  • cryopreservation of sperm;
  • cryopreservation of ovarian tissue.

Each clinical case is reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee. It includes oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, neuroradiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, etc. The doctors work together to develop the most effective treatment plan.

The centre specialises in diagnosis and treatment of:

  • malignant neoplasms of endocrine organs (thyroid cancer, periothyroid gland);
  • bone and soft tissue sarcomas (osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma);
  • gastrointestinal tumours (gastric, bowel cancer);
  • malignant neoplasms of the head and neck (glioma, meningioma, neurinoma);
  • tumours of the female reproductive organs (uterine, cervical and ovarian cancer);
  • malignant neoplasms of the breast;
  • tumours of the male genital organs (prostate, testicular, penile cancer);
  • blood cancer (leukaemia);
  • skin tumours (basalioma, melanoma, Merkel carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma);
  • rare tumours (carcinosarcoma, adenocystic cancer).

General, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery Clinic

Aachen University Hospital

The Department of Abdominal Surgery and Transplantation at the Aachen Hospital is considered to be the leading medical institution in Germany in the fight against malignant neoplasms of the bowel. More than 3,000 surgeries are performed here every year.

The department treats abdominal organ pathologies. The Department treats abdominal and pancreatic oncology. Priority areas are the surgical treatment of cancer. The head doctor of the department is Professor Ulf Peter Neumann.

The department has four high-tech operating theatres with modern equipment:

  • CUSA and LIMAX systems for liver surgery;
  • HD high-resolution technology for minimally invasive surgery;
  • special instruments for laparoscopic surgery.

The department prefers a minimally invasive surgery, which doesn’t leave large scars. Patients recover more quickly after these operations. The risks of infection and bleeding are minimised.

Under this project, the hospital serves patients of different ages. It provides a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of kidney and urinary tract diseases.

The department has 16 doctors and 30 nurses. Here they remove kidney, ureter and bladder stones in a minimally invasive way. No extensive incisions or scars.

Cardiovascular surgery Aachen

Aachen University Hospital

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery treats various pathologies of the heart and blood vessels. In 2019, the latest generation of hybrid operating theatres was commissioned at the Aachen Clinic. It allows doctors to simultaneously perform diagnostics and surgical treatment of cardiovascular and lung diseases. They are planning to perform about 600 operations each year using the hybrid operating room.

The hybrid operating system is a combination of a cardiac catheter laboratory and state-of-the-art robotic X-ray technology. The system has been successfully used to perform complex minimally invasive interventions that were previously unavailable.

At the end of January 2019, the Aachen University Hospital commissioned a second state-of-the-art electrophysiological examination laboratory (EPU laboratory) for the treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmia. From now on, cardiologists perform arrhythmia interventions in two rooms simultaneously. Both laboratories are among the best in Germany.
