Clinic Review
Abromiskes Rehabilitation Centre was founded in 1976, near Vilnius. The clinic specialises in rehabilitation after stroke, heart attack, spinal injuries; and adapting patients with autism, cerebral palsy and Parkinson's to a full life. The centre has departments for neurological, orthopaedic, cardiac and paediatric rehabilitation. In addition, it offers disease prevention and wellness programmes.
Each year the centre receives up to 6,000 patients from all over the world, making it the largest rehabilitation centre in Lithuania. There are 210 beds available for inpatient treatment. The centre employs 50 specialists, including 21 rehabilitation therapists, 19 doctors of various profiles and 9 psychologists. Patients from all over the world feel comfortable, thanks to the multilingual staff.
The differences between rehabilitation at Abromiskes and other clinics:
Low cost: the price of rehabilitation is 30-50% lower than in centres in Israel and Germany;
Diagnostics and process monitoring: assessment of pain relief, muscle strength, psychological comfort;
No language barriers: multilingual staff;
Environmentally friendly: the centre is surrounded by a pine forest;
Multidisciplinary approach: both doctors and psychologists work with the patient.
The Abromiskes Rehabilitation Centre is a part of the Ministry of Health. The work of the clinic is supported by the state, so the doctors have no commercial interest. The patient's physical and psychological well-being comes first. The centre also participates in the national anti-corruption programme "Thank the doctor with a smile".
Features of the Clinic
Abromiskes Rehabilitation Centre specialists deal with complex cases of recovery from strokes, injuries, surgery and congenital abnormalities. They work with patients for whom medication and surgery are not enough to overcome the effects of illness. Each person is treated individually. Upon request, a detailed rehabilitation programme is drawn up based on the medical history. Group exercises are also possible during the course. Abromiskes Rehabilitation Centre offers the following rehabilitation services:
Kinesitherapy - active exercise under the supervision of a therapist;
Kinesiotherapy in water - physical exercises in water;
Ergotherapy - learning household skills;
Massage;
Physiotherapy treatments.
For those patients who know exactly what kind of rehabilitation course they need, Abromiskes Medical Centre offers ready-made programmes. These are drawn up in advance by a team of rehabilitation therapists and psychologists. A person can choose their programme. They will know in advance the length of stay, cost and methods of rehabilitation
There are two types of programmes: rehabilitation and wellness. Rehabilitation programmes aim at advanced diagnostics and treatment. Participation in a wellness programme is useful in preventing or containing the progression of an illness.
The rehabilitation practice takes a systematic approach. Not only medical staff but also psychologists work with each patient. They provide art therapy, music therapy and social groups. A separate area of work is devoted to social adaptation. As a result, the patient can more easily endure the consequences of the operation, accept the changes in their body and be ready to live their life to the fullest. A good psychological atmosphere is the pride of the centre. The staff at the clinic monitors the patient's comfort and provides psychological support at all stages of rehabilitation.
The centre also uses unconventional approaches to treatment. In 2010, a wax room was set up in the clinic. Its purpose is to strengthen patients' immune systems. As a nice bonus, the room can be used to restore performance and feel inner harmony. Another type of treatment - a salt room - is available for children.
DIAGNOSIS AT THE ABROMISKES CLINIC
The Abromiskes centre has developed methods of diagnosing the patient's condition. Medical staff carry out three types of diagnostics:
Functional examinations;
Ultrasound examinations;
Clinical tests.
The main difference between the Abromiskes rehabilitation centre and other clinics is the state-of-the-art equipment. For example, the clinic uses unique Back-Check and BIODEX systems in day-to-day work.
The Back-Check system allows finding the cause of back, neck or lower back pain. A personalised exercise plan is drawn up based on the results of the diagnosis.
The BIODEX system assesses a patient's muscular strength and endurance. For 25 years, it has been considered the safest method of diagnosing muscle conditions. It enables patients to recover faster from injuries.
CARDIAC REHABILITATION AT ABROMISKES CENTRE
Rehabilitation therapists work with patients in the post-operative or post-stroke period. There is a wide range of indications for rehabilitation. The recovery process can take from 7 to 21 days. After undergoing a rehabilitation programme, the patient is expected to have increased stamina, normalised blood pressure and heart rate. They will also receive recommendations for proper nutrition and degree of physical activity. The patient's relatives will learn how to recognise signs of a cardiac arrest so that help can be given in time.
The centre has ready-made cardiac rehabilitation programmes.

CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT AT ABROMISKES CLINIC
A separate centre has been built for children, at a distance from the adult ward. The atmosphere in the clinic is as close to home as possible so that the child feels safe. There are multi-purpose wheelchairs, lift beds and modern stilts available for the care of critically ill children. There is a school in the children's ward. Children can be rehabilitated and continue their learning process.
Indications for neurorehabilitation include cerebral palsy, brain and spinal injuries, hydrocephalus, neck deformities and joint diseases. The main focus of the rehabilitation programme is on kinesitherapy. The children's ward has two gym rooms, new exercise bikes, a Back-Check machine, a Red-Cord suspension system, a vertical bath and two pools. After a course of rehabilitation, a child can regain a lost skill or adapt to its loss, strengthen muscle strength, improve coordination and develop speech skills.
Respiratory rehabilitation is required for bronchial asthma, pneumonia or cystic fibrosis. Inhalations, including salt inhalation, are used to improve the child's condition. After rehabilitation, the cough will become weaker, and the respiratory muscles, as well as the immune system, will be strengthened.
Rehabilitation for children with developmental disabilities is indicated for hyperkinesia, autism or neurosis. A rehabilitation course will teach the child to take care of themselves, dress up, tie their shoelaces, clear the table, wash the dishes and do other everyday chores. During the course, the child will also socialise with other people and develop social skills. There are animals on the ward, and young patients can learn how to look after them.
In addition to medical procedures, psychologists work with children and parents. For children, psychologists provide play therapy, lead video relaxation groups and develop recommendations for the child's social adaptation. For parents, psychologists work out recommendations so that the effects of the treatment can be maintained at home as well.
