Jaw and chin augmentation
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons, jaw and chin plastic surgery is among the most popular procedures among men.
The shape of the jaw, cheekbones and chin determines the perception of the whole face and enhances masculinity. Patients who turn to plastic surgeons want a big, expressive chin, a square jaw and high cheekbones.
Modern facial plastic surgery uses minimally invasive techniques and leaves no scars. The surgeon makes incisions inside the oral cavity and, depending on your goals, gently saws away excess bone tissue or adds volume with implants.
Facial implants are mostly made of solid silicone, so they can last a lifetime. Medpor or Gore-Tex implants are sometimes available.
Jaw implants
Since the lateral projection and protrusion of the angle of the jaw is a masculine and aesthetically pleasing feature, many patients want to achieve it surgically. These implants are placed in pairs, one on each side. They are placed through a small incision in the back of the mouth near the depression between the gingiva and the inside of the lip or cheek.
Chin implants
The shape of the chin, which is created during plastic surgery, is modelled by mathematical measurements. Doctors use the so-called ‘Frankfort horizon’, an imaginary line drawn parallel to the floor from a point at the bottom of the eye socket to a point at the top of the ear canal. The ‘ideal’ chin should protrude forward to an imaginary line drawn from the lower lip downwards.
A chin implant can be placed through a small incision on the inside of the mouth or concealed under the chin. The incision under the chin is most often used when chin implants are combined with a face or neck lift.
Midface implants
As we age, there is a loss of volume in the middle part of the face. Men seek rejuvenation treatments, but the specifics will also be different than for women. To get natural results, excessive fullness in the middle part of the face, which is a typical feminine feature, should be avoided. For this reason, doctors use more conservative techniques. One of the most popular male rejuvenation surgery techniques is the midface implant. It is inserted through a small incision inside the cheek and allows to achieve a more youthful facial contour.

Male rhinoplasty
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), rhinoplasty was the number one surgery among men in 2020.
Successful rhinoplasty can improve facial symmetry, resize and/or reshape the nose, minimise flaws on the bridge of the nose and remove a bulging tip or a hooked nose. Experienced plastic surgeons consider not only the desired shape of the nose but also the overall proportions of the face. The benefits of nasal surgery for men:

A special feature of male rhinoplasty is that the surgeon is tasked with emphasising the external characteristics of a masculine face. The male nose, unlike the female nose, usually has a prominent, straight nose bridge and a nasal tip that protrudes at a 90-degree angle between the nose and the upper lip.
There are three possible approaches to surgery:
Open – an incision is made in the area between the nostrils. This approach is used to reshape the tip of the nose. This leaves a small, almost invisible scar.
Closed – the postoperative scars are hidden inside the nose. However, this way the surgeon can achieve fewer changes than with open surgery.
Rhinoplasty with fillers – instead of removing tissue, the surgeon injects fillers to ‘fill in’ depressions, smooth out sharp corners or change the angle of the nasal tip. This surgery is less invasive and recovery will be short and easy.
Rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with septoplasty – reconstruction of the nasal septum. In rare cases, plastic surgeons may use injections of fatty tissue to add volume to the desired area of the nose.

Blepharoplasty and bags under the eyes
Ageing of the eye area affects both men and women, and many people seek blepharoplasty to look more youthful. As men age, their eyelids droop due to excess fat and skin, creating under-eye bags and puffiness. This not only prematurely ages the person, but also creates the effect of constant fatigue.
Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in combination with other facial surgery procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift.
The surgical techniques used for male blepharoplasty differ from the procedures performed on women. Male skin tends to be thicker and the eyebrows are lower. When operating on men, surgeons remove excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelid area and tighten the eyelid muscles. Small incisions made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid are then closed with absorbable sutures.
In upper eyelid blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat are removed. The incision is made along the natural crease line of the upper eyelids. Sometimes it is extended to the “laugh line” area. After removing the excess skin and fat, very small sutures are placed.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty depends on the tissue structure as well as the expectations and preferences of the patient. Men most often come in with pronounced bags under the eyes and loose skin. In these cases, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed. For this procedure, an incision is made under the eyelashes, extending approximately 1 cm. The skin is then lifted upwards and outwards to create tension and excess tissue is removed.

Facelift
In 2019, facelifts were among the top 5 most popular plastic surgeries. 10% of the patients were men.
Men usually undergo a facelift in combination with contouring to look more masculine or serious. The surgery often aims to create a “chiselled” clear jawline. The second reason for seeking a facelift is age-related changes in appearance.
A common problem that patients present with is a sagging neck, which not only ages but also prevents them from shaving properly. In this case, liposuction, a procedure to remove fat, may be necessary. Liposuction of the neck in men can be tricky because the fat in this area is more fibrous and difficult to remove. Surgeons must have experience in male plastic surgery to achieve natural-looking results.
Because of the anatomical structure of facial tissues, male plastic surgery differs significantly from female plastic surgery. Women have thinner skin as well as muscle and connective tissue, which makes surgery easier for the surgeon. This is all taken into account when planning surgery and choosing surgical techniques. Doctors use techniques designed for the stronger bone structure and dense muscles of the male patient so that there is no “mask effect” after the surgery.

Because of the presence of a beard, the areas where incisions are made are also different. Plastic surgeons take care to ensure that the scar does not disturb the growth line of the beard and sideburns as it heals. Neck lift
For a neck lift, the most common procedure is called a direct excision. It consists of removing saggy skin. It is a simple outpatient procedure that is performed under local anaesthetic. In the end, the patient is left with a small zigzag scar on the front of the neck that heals well.
SMAS lifting
SMAS is the most popular facelift that uses devices specifically designed for the purpose. The procedure can also be supplemented with lipofilling – subcutaneous injections of the patient’s fatty tissue to give volume in the desired areas. The two specific techniques most commonly used to treat male patients are:
Lateral SMAS-ectomy is particularly effective for improving the contours of the neck and lower face in men. It complements the shape of the craniofacial architecture, thereby enhancing its natural angularity.
The High SMAS Facelift is indicated in cases where age-related soft tissue changes are present uniformly throughout the face. It is recommended for men with sunken midface contour, pronounced nasolabial folds and bags under the eyes.
In addition to more invasive procedures, many older men are interested in Botox injections. They can be performed as a stand-alone procedure if the patient is not ready to undergo full-blown surgery, or in conjunction with other rejuvenation interventions. Botox is often used to correct crow’s feet, forehead creases and neck wrinkles. It can also help with migraines, profuse sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eye area.
In the West, a procedure called “executive edge surgery” is gaining popularity. It was developed by American plastic surgeon Marguerite Burnett specifically for the country’s top CEOs and managers.
