Clinic Review

Veni Vidi Hospital

Veni Vidi is one of Turkey's first ophthalmology clinics. It is located in Istanbul and also has nine centres in key cities in the country: Ankara, Sakarya and Izmir. These clinics were the first in the country to carry out laser vision correction. The Veni Vidi Eye Clinic performs more than 50,000 surgeries each year, more than 6,000 of which are performed on foreign patients.

Laser vision correction at the Veni Vidi Clinic is up to 99% effective, and virtually all medical procedures are free of complications. In addition, the ophthalmologists at this centre specialise in complex procedures such as phacoemulsification of cataracts with insertion of an intraocular lens and keratoplasty, which have a success rate of 95-99%.

The ophthalmic chain has been audited by TÜV Rheinland, an independent quality assurance organisation operating in 65 countries with more than 140 years of experience, and has been awarded the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Certificate and the ISO 10002: 2018 Customer Satisfaction Certificate.

The doctors working at the Veni Vidi Clinic are specialists of the highest calibre. A large number of foreign ophthalmologists work at the centre, and the doctors regularly participate in international conferences and exchange programmes. Compared to an average ophthalmologist, the experts at Veni Vidi have more surgical experience. Each of them has performed an average of more than 30,000 operations during their career.

The ophthalmologists at the Veni Vidi Clinic are active members of professional medical societies such as the Turkish Ophthalmological Association, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the European Retinal Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the German Ophthalmological Society.

The Veni Vidi Clinic offers a full range of medical services for the treatment of eye disorders. Qualified ophthalmologists can help you find an individual solution to any problem. The most popular procedures include:

  • Laser vision correction (LASIK, iLASIK, IRPL, SLT, YAG, Relex SMILE, No Touch laser);
  • Intraocular lens implantation (MFIOL, Smart Lens Therapy, toric lenses, “smart” lenses);
  • Cataract surgery, phacoemulsification, ZEPTO;
  • MACROvision Surgery;

Features of the Clinic

Laser surgery at the Veni Vidi clinic

Laser surgery is a modern, painless and safe method of treating myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia once and for all. The modern equipment used at the Veni Vidi Clinic guarantees restoration of vision in 99% of cases. And thanks to the expertise of the ophthalmologists, 99.7% of operations proceed without any complications.

All patients must undergo a comprehensive diagnosis before having laser vision correction. This will enable the doctor to determine the exact diagnosis, verify that there are no contraindications for the procedure and obtain information on the structure of the eye needed for treatment. In particular, the thickness and shape of the cornea are measured, which must be within certain limits for the surgery to be permitted. In addition, the patient's age, health history and the number of diopters are also important when deciding whether to have laser eye surgery.

Among the laser vision correction options that are used at the Veni Vidi Clinic are:

лазерная коррекция зрения в вени види
LasikLasik is used to treat myopia and hyperopia. Using a special instrument, the microkeratome, the doctor creates a corneal flap and flips it aside. This gives the surgeon access to the cornea, which is then "polished" to the required shape by an excimer laser. After that, the flap is fixed in place. After 3-5 days, the patient fully recovers.
iLasik

iLasik is performed to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, as well as corneal ring implantation and keratoplasty. Such surgery is performed without the use of a scalpel. Instead, a femtosecond laser is used, controlled by a computer system. This technology is more personalised and adjusts more precisely to the individual shape of the patient's eye.
No Touch Laser/Trans PRKDuring the No-Touch Laser operation, the surgeon does not touch the cornea. All manipulations are performed using the laser alone. This allows the procedure to be recommended for patients with thin corneas, severe refractive errors or after cataract removal. After this procedure, the risk of developing "dry eye syndrome" is minimal.

Check-up packages at the Veni Vidi clinic

The Veni Vidi Clinic offers several diagnostic check-up packages for international patients, depending on specific needs.

The standard vision diagnostic package includes:

  • Biometry;
  • Tonometry;
  • Funduscopic examination;
  • Refractive test;
  • Schirmer test;
  • Optical coherence tomography;
  • Mirror microscopy;
  • Ishihara test for colour blindness.

Patients who would like to undergo laser vision correction undergo a set of examinations to determine the suitability of the procedure:

  • Autorefractometry – determination of refractive error using infra-red light;
  • Biometry – determination of intraocular lens power;
  • Tonometry – measurement of eye pressure;
  • Pachymetry – measurement of corneal thickness;
  • Funduscopy – examination of the retina and optic nerve;
  • Corneal topography – mapping the curvature of the corneal surface;
  • Pupillometry – examining the size and dynamics of the pupil;
  • Wavefront testing;
  • Blood tests (HBsAg, HVC, HIV).

Cataract treatment at the Veni Vidi clinic

The success rate of cataract surgery at the Veni Vidi Clinic is above 99%.

The only way to cure cataracts completely is through surgery. Most doctors recommend seeing a doctor if the loss of vision is affecting the quality of life of the patient and interfering with daily tasks. There are several types of surgery used in the treatment of cataracts; however, the essence is the same – replacing the clouded lens with a new one.

The most common surgery performed at the Veni Vidi Clinic is the FAKO method – phacoemulsification of cataracts followed by the installation of an intraocular lens. During this procedure, the affected cataract lens is melted by ultrasound and replaced with a stretchable intraocular lens. The operation is performed using special surgical microscopes and a laser.

Veni Vidi Hospital

The treatment takes place in two stages. A single-lens replacement lasts no more than 10 minutes. After the procedure, the eye is bandaged, and the patient can safely go home. The eye must be left bandaged overnight and the next day the bandage is removed. Improvement of vision will be seen immediately. Within a few days, the same procedure is done on the other eye.

An important element of cataract surgery is the technology with which the lens will be placed in the eye. This is one of the main elements that determine the effectiveness of the surgery. Patients are offered treatment options in which they can see at long, short and medium distances.

Intraocular lenses are divided into three: single-focus, double-focus and triple-focus. The choice of lens depends on the patient's health and budget.

  • Monofocal lenses are single-focus lenses. When they are used, the patient will be able to see well at long distances, but at close distances, for example, when reading or looking at a computer screen, special glasses will need to be worn.
  • Bifocals are lenses with two points of focus. The patient will be able to see normally at far and near, but the distance between 40 cm and 2 m will be out of focus without glasses.
  • As a result of the use of trifocal smart lenses, patients will not need to wear glasses after surgery.

The Veni Vidi Clinic specialises in the surgical treatment of cataracts using trifocal lenses. More than 120,000 such operations have been performed here.

In some cases, bifocal lenses may be used to treat high myopia, or after unsuccessful vision correction. The vision does not decrease after lens replacement.

Treatment of retinal diseases

Yellow spot degeneration

Yellow spot degeneration is an age-related eye disease that leads to a consistent loss of vision. The main treatments for this condition are vitamin Omega-3 supplementation and intraocular anti-VEGF injections. As a surgical treatment for macular degeneration, MACRO-vision surgery is performed. The procedure enlarges the images that reach the retina, which, in combination with corrective glasses, allows people to see better at far and near. Surgical treatment is possible even when the disease is at a severe stage.

MACRO-vision can be performed in conjunction with cataract surgery or in patients who have undergone FAKO surgery in the past.

In young patients with maculopathy, it is possible to perform this surgery using a second lens that is placed inside the eye without affecting the patient's lens. During the examination, it is possible to simulate the application and assess the amount of improvement in a person's vision.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is caused by trauma to the eyeball. Corneal surgery is used to treat keratoconus to restore the integrity, transparency or optical properties of the cornea. The procedures used to treat the disease depend on its stage. In the first stages, the symptoms can be managed with glasses, but in the future surgery may be required. In this case, a surgeon inserts a small device into the cornea to correct its curvature. Eye drops are used to strengthen the organ.

The main method used in the treatment of keratoconus is hybrid surgery. This laser treatment removes irregularities on the surface of the cornea with vitamin B2, and ultraviolet light therapy also strengthens the cornea in one session. This stops the progression of keratoconus.

Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty)

Corneal transplantation is used to treat keratoconus, bullous keratopathy, corneal scarring, retransplantation and stromal dystrophies.

The keratoplasty procedure is performed differently depending on the location of the lesion.

  • If all layers of the cornea are affected, a penetrating corneal transplant is performed (PKP/PK). The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
  • If the anterior cornea is affected, as in keratoconus, only that section will be replaced. This surgery is called deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). It can be performed under general or local anaesthesia.
  • If the damage is only to the back of the cornea, only it is replaced. There is no suture left in this procedure, so the patient does not have astigmatism. This procedure is called a posterior lamellar keratoplasty (PLK).

Depending on the type of surgery, keratoplasty can take between 45 minutes and 2 hours. For the first year after treatment, you will need to have regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist. It is also essential to use eye drops after keratoplasty.

The success rate of corneal transplants at the Veni Vidi Clinic, depending on the disease and surgical technique, is 60-95%.

Corneal transplantation at Veni Vidi is performed by Dr Remzi Karadağ. He has 20 years of experience in this procedure and has trained at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital at Thomas Jefferson University in the USA.

The graft used in cornea transplants at Veni Vidi comes from an international donor bank based in the USA.

Eyelid surgery at the Veni Vidi Clinic

The Veni Vidi Clinic performs blepharoplasty, ptosis surgery, entropion and ectropion repair, and pterygium surgery.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is performed if there is an overhanging of the eyelid that makes it difficult to focus the eyesight normally. During the procedure, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and the eyelid is lifted.

Before the surgery, the patient is examined by biomicroscopy to find out if he or she has any other eye diseases. This operation may be contraindicated for people with ocular surface diseases and dry eye symptoms.

The stitches after blepharoplasty are removed after a week and recovery take an average of 10-14 days.

Surgery for pterygium

Pterygium is an abnormal growth on the mucous membrane of the eye, usually growing from the side of the lacrimal gland towards the zenith. The disease is treated by surgery.

Pterygium surgery removes the neoplasm and closes it with a graft of the patient's conjunctival tissue. The area is sutured with resorbable sutures. This is followed by a limbal stem cell transplant. For half a year after surgery, it will be necessary to use eye drops for hydration.

FAQ

Veni Vidi is a Turkish ophthalmology clinic that specialises in: laser vision correction, corneal transplants, treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, yellow spot degeneration and other eye diseases.
The ophthalmologists working at Veni Vidi Clinic are professionals with many years of experience, well known both in Turkey and abroad. Among them are doctors Remzi Karadağ, Tuğrul Akın, Akın Akyurt, Özer Kavalcıoğlu, Sultan Kaya Ünsal, Ertan Sunay and others. Compared to an average ophthalmologist, Veni Vidi experts have more surgical experience.
The ophthalmologists at the Veni Vidi Clinic individually select quality brands of intraocular lenses for each patient. The most commonly used lenses are from manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson, Alcon, Bausch + Lomb and Carl Zeiss Meditec.
The package includes an examination by an ophthalmologist, a computer diagnosis, the actual laser correction (on both eyes); as well as airport-clinic-airport transfers, an interpreter and 2 days hotel accommodation.
Patients who use contact lenses should switch to glasses. A few days before the surgery you should not wear any make-up, creams, lotions or other facial products. As with any other surgery, you must stop smoking and stop taking any medication that your doctor will tell you about.
Before any ophthalmological treatment is carried out, it is necessary to obtain the results of examinations to ensure that the patient is not contraindicated for a particular procedure. In the case of vision correction, these are usually computer vision diagnostics and pachymetry (ultrasound or optical measurement of corneal thickness).
The cost of treatment at the Veni Vidi Clinic depends on the illness of the set of procedures prescribed by the doctor. Compared to European clinics at a similar level, patients can save up to 30-50%.
