The prostate centre uses medication, surgical and other (non-surgical) methods of treating prostate neoplasms. In the case of localized prostate cancer, the preservation of erectile function and a complete act of urination is achieved by especially gentle surgical procedures.

Brachytherapy is one of the effective and safe methods to treat prostate cancer. Doctors Ramin Werner Djamali-Leonhard and Friedemann Meisse conduct the procedure as chief specialists at the Brachytherapy Department of the Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg. Two types of therapy are used in the treatment of patients: LDR (low-dose) and HDR (high-dose). For low-dose prostate brachytherapy (LDR), “grains”, containing a source of alpha iodine-125 are used. In high-dose brachytherapy (HDR) the source of radiation is iridium-192.
In the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (prostate adenoma) the hospital uses medication therapy and transurethral resection – methods that help reduce the volume of the gland. As a result, the patient feels less discomfort with the disease. In addition to the methods described, urologists at the Munich-Planegg Clinic practice prostate artery embolization. This innovative procedure is performed endovascularly under local anaesthesia and is completely safe. The aim of embolization is to limit the blood supply to the prostate, which subsequently leads to a reduction in its size and, as a result, an improvement in urination and the patient’s general condition. In order to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the stage of development of the cancer process, the patient undergoes a number of routine and specialized studies. As a rule, this list includes laboratory tests (blood tests, cancer markers, genetic markers of the tumour process) as well as instrumental methods of research (MRI, CT, PET-CT, cystoscopy, etc.). Much attention is paid to the process of taking a biopsy and the study of the obtained material. Modern equipment and well-coordinated work of medical personnel allow the patient to pass a complete diagnosis in just 3-4 days.
The hospital’s Cancer Center works closely with the Department of Reconstructive Urogenital Surgery. Together, specialists perform complex reconstructive surgeries to restore the functionality of organs after radical operations. Most often, reconstructive surgeries are performed after bladder cancer, uterine cancer, and genital cancer.
In the treatment process, the clinic’s specialists apply the latest developments of modern medicine. Under the guidance of Professor M. Kriegmair developed the process of improving endoscopic detection, especially in the early stages of aggressive bladder tumour (carcinoma in situ), the so-called «photodynamic diagnostics» (PDD). After the introduction of a special dye into the bladder, cancer cells become bright red when the affected area is illuminated by special blue rays. Since the introduction of this method, bladder tumours are detected earlier and therefore treated faster. Cancer interventions are carried out in modern and fully equipped operating theatres.

Later, he was chief urologist at the district hospital in Ebersberg.
