ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BRNO
The main speciality of the oncology department of Brno Hospital is the treatment of blood cancers. The clinic offers treatment for lymphoma, leukaemia and other diseases with chemotherapy or targeted therapy.
The University Hospital Brno is a haematopoietic stem cell transplant centre. It is accredited by the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT). The clinic is also seeking JACIE accreditation.
In 2019, advanced cellular gene therapy using CAR-T lymphocytes became available at the hospital. It was successfully used to save the life of a patient with B-cell lymphoma of the mediastinum.
Chemotherapy and minimally invasive surgery are available for patients with solid tumours. For women with breast cancer, lumpectomy and mastectomy are performed. For men with a prostate tumour, prostatectomy is possible.
The University Hospital in Brno has become the first institution to treat a benign prostate tumour with steam. The new technology is called Rezum and it has already been performed on 6 patients. In contrast to traditional endoscopic surgery, laser surgery or radiofrequency ablation, Rezum does not require hospitalization and is more easily tolerated by patients.

The department is headed by Dr Martin Repko, a renowned spinal surgeon who specialises in treating spinal deformities. The department has 3 sterile operating theatres. The University Hospital Brno is the only clinic in Europe where autotransfusion devices can be used during spinal surgeries.

CARDIOLOGY AND CARDIAC SURGERY AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BRNO
The department is run by renowned interventional cardiac surgeon Petr Kala. He performs coronary artery bypass surgery, stenting and pacemaker installation for patients of all ages.
Doctors from the Department of Internal Cardiology saved a patient with an acute myocardial infarction with severe left ventricular dysfunction. This was the first time in the Czech Republic that they performed an ECMO surgery. The surgeons managed to restore blood circulation and breathing in the patient.
Cardiologists at the University Hospital Brno have implanted an electrodeless pacemaker for the first time. This is a unique pacemaker designed specifically for patients with a high risk of infective endocarditis. The availability of such surgery will significantly reduce the risk of post-surgical complications.

TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN BRNO

In December 2020, the clinic performed the world's first scoliosis surgery using the new Ennovate system. A 15-year-old patient successfully underwent the 4.5-hour procedure. She was fitted with an implant system from the German company Braun, which will last a lifetime. Doctors in the Czech Republic are predicting that she will be able to play sports.
The paediatric neurology department employs 17 doctors and 4 psychologists. Children's neurological disorders are diagnosed in a special laboratory, which is equipped with the Keypoint Workstation system. Children's epilepsy is diagnosed by Brain Quick and Galileo electroencephalography. For the last 5 years, more than 4,730 kids have had EEG examinations at the Medical Centre.
The paediatric oncology department has admitted more than 11,330 children for outpatient treatment. A total of 2,200 kids were admitted to the hospital for inpatient treatment. According to Jaroslav Štěrba, a paediatric oncologist, the success rate in treating children with cancer at the Brno clinic exceeds 90%. The centre has a bone marrow transplant unit. Children can safely receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy following the European protocols.
Specialists at the paediatric oncology centre were able to discharge a 9-month-old baby after a complex ALPPS surgery to treat hepatoblastoma. During the intervention, doctors stopped the blood flow to the liver and then removed the tumour itself. The patient then underwent chemotherapy. Doctors were able to make the boy go into remission without any postoperative complications.
