Clinic Review

University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg

The University Hospital Giessen and Marburg is one of the oldest public hospitals in Germany. For more than 45 years, hundreds of thousands of people have turned there for help. The two branches of the hospital, in Giessen and Marburg, treat more than 500,000 patients every year. The hospital is part of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen. This means that new medicines, as well as diagnostic and surgical methods, are available at the clinic earlier than ever before.

The hospital has 80 departments. The hospital’s main specialities are anaesthesiology, transplantology, robotic surgery, oncology and oncological surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and paediatrics.

More than 175,000 patients from Europe, the USA and Arabic countries come to the clinic for inpatient treatment every year. For outpatient treatment, the clinic accepts more than 325,000 patients each year.

To help such a large number of people, the clinic employs 9,500 medical workers. This includes more than 2,500 doctors, nurses and researchers.

Oncology Department of the Giessen and Marburg Univeristy Hospital

Cancer treatment with modern chemotherapy drugs is available at the Department of Oncology at the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg. The Radiotherapy Centre at the German clinic in Giessen and Marburg meets the strict requirements of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO) and the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP).

Radiation therapy takes place on state-of-the-art linear accelerators IMRT and IMAT / VMAT. The system allows the radiation to be pinpointed to preserve healthy cells. Accuracy of action is improved by the fact that the machine adapts to the person’s breathing. Each year, 1,500 patients receive radiation therapy at the hospital.

A unique method of treating cancer with ion therapy is available at the Ion Therapy Centre. Its principle is similar to that of radiotherapy: the patient’s tumour is exposed to radiation. However, instead of X-rays, the machine uses ions and protons.

This therapy is faster and less harmful to the patient. For example, after particle therapy at the Gießen and Marburg University Hospital, dry mouth and stomach diseases were less frequently diagnosed among patients.

There are only 3 clinics in Germany where this treatment is available.

More than 200 patients have successfully undergone ion-proton therapy. In 2016, the clinic performed proton therapy on an infant for the first time. Ion-proton therapy can be used to treat:

  • soft tissue sarcoma;
  • brain tumours;
  • prostate cancer;
  • pancreatic cancer.

The Gießen and Marburg Hospital is one of the few in Germany to be equipped with the modern da Vinci robotic system. With it, doctors can perform precise and minimally traumatic operations after which the patient recovers more easily and within 3-4 weeks.

The Da Vinci System is a robotic surgeon that is remotely controlled by a doctor. The operating console gives the surgeon a three-dimensional microscopic vision system and allows the surgeon to see small vessels in 10x magnification. And the motion scaling system allows for unmistakable precision actions. This is particularly important in brain surgery.

The da Vinci robot is used extensively in adult and paediatric urology, otolaryngology, oncology, gynaecology and in the departments of visceral, thoracic and vascular surgery.
