Features of the Clinic
ONCOHEMATOLOGY AT THE ANTALYA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Diagnostics and therapy for cancer and benign blood diseases are carried out at the Medstar Antalya Hematology Clinic and the Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre.
Foreign patients most often come here for treatment of multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, acute and chronic leukemia (AML, ALL, KML, KLL). The success rate of bone marrow transplantation in this medical center is more than 95%. ,Doctors of the Center monitor the lymphatic and immune systems, as well as bone marrow of patients. They apply modern methods of treatment of malignant blood diseases: new generation medicines, antibodies, targeting therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and bone marrow transplantation (allogenic and autologous). After the bone marrow transplant patients stay in single wards equipped with special air filtration systems that minimize the risk of infection.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Center includes:
immunology department;
blood bank;
radiology department;
intensive care unit;
bone marrow transplantation unit.
ORGAN TRANSPLANT AT THE ANTALYA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Memorial is the first private hospital in Turkey licensed by the Ministry of Health in March 2004 for organ (liver and kidney) transplantation and related laboratory services.
Over 260 liver transplants and 370 kidney transplants were performed there in 2019. Most of the transplants were performed at the Medstar Memorial Antalya Hospital.
Organ transplantation centers of the Memorial Network in Antalya are among the top consulting centers in the world, especially for liver and kidney transplantation. Patients from the USA, Europe, and the Middle East come here, in particular, from Balkan countries and Turkic republics.
The Memorial is also known for the training it provides at the center for foreign doctors. Doctors, mainly from Europe and the USA, get internships in organ transplantation in this medical institution.
Head of the Transplantology Center is Prof. Dr. Münci Kalayoğlu. Dr. Kalayoğlu has performed over 45,000 surgical interventions over the years of his practice, including over 2,000 liver transplants. His deputy, the leading surgeon of Turkey, is Dr. Koray Acarli. He has performed about 120 liver transplantations, more than 150 kidney transplantations, and 3 pancreatic transplantations.
NEUROSURGERY AT MEMORIAL ANTALYA
For the diagnosis and treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, as well as other lesions of the nervous system, specialists from the neurosurgical department of Memorial Antalya use PET / CT, Trubeam STx, CUSA, intraoperative ultrasound, etc. At the same time, surgical risks are minimized through the use of such advanced technologies as:
NEURONAVIGATION
Used during the brain and spinal cord operations. This technology provides a three-dimensional visualization of the operated area. This method implies the use of MR-images of the pathological site, made before the operation, and transferred to the neuronavigation device. Thus, during the intervention, it is possible to clearly visualize the operating areas in the brain or spinal cord.
NEUROMONITORING
This method is used in the treatment of brain tumors, aneurysms, and spinal cord tumors, as well as in complex spinal surgery. Special sensors are put on the patient's body, that signal when the surgeon is in the "dangerous" zone and can damage nerves. Thus, the risk of paralysis of the face, arms or legs that may occur after the operation is significantly reduced.
INTRAOPERATIVE ULTRASONOGRAPHY
During the operation, the radiologist uses an ultrasound machine to check the location of the tumor and the extent of its removal. In particular, intraoperative ultrasonography makes it possible to remove all tumors that are difficult to distinguish from the tissue of the brain and spinal cord.
CONTRAST-ENHANCING SURGERY
Before surgery, the patient is injected with a substance called Gliolan that stains the tumor in a different color. With this method, damage to normal brain tissue is minimal, the effect on the tumor is higher, and the risk of neurological disorders is reduced.
CRANIOTOMY IN CONSCIOUSNESS
In the surgery of tumors located in the speech center of the brain or in the area responsible for motor skills, doctors use craniotomy. This prevents damage to vital brain structures and reduces the chance of severe complications to zero. During the operation, the patient is asked simple questions (what's your name, how old are you, count to ten) or asked to perform an action (raise your hand). In this way, doctors control their actions and understand that they have not damaged an important part of the speech or motor cortex. There are no pain receptors in the brain, and therefore the operation is painless.
INTRAOPERATIVE CT (O-ARM)
During the operation, the doctors perform a CT scan that displays the current state of the patient's organs and systems. This is especially important for spinal operations.
O-Arm technology, which can take a three-dimensional tomography image, allows the surgeon to get accurate information about the tumor at each stage of surgery.
In this way, the patient is less exposed to radiation, and the risk of relapse is lower.
ROBOTIC SURGERY AT THE ANTALYA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
At the Antalya Memorial Hospital, there is a Robotic Surgery Center, where minimally invasive operations are performed to treat urological, oncological, gynecological and other diseases. They have the latest generation Da Vinci Xi System, which allows performing surgical interventions with minimal risk to the patient's health. The main advantages of using the Da Vinci robot are:
After da Vinci's robotic surgery, the patient's stay at the hospital is approximately 1-4 days. About 92% of patients go home on the second day after the operation.
Blood loss during surgery is minimal, unlike in traditional open surgery. The cut made with the robot does not exceed 2 cm.
Very few painkillers are used during the operation and after discharge from the hospital.
After da Vinci's robotic surgery, more than 90% of patients return to their normal lives within 2-3 weeks of surgery.
CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY AT THE ANTALYA MEMORIAL CLINIC
Cardiovascular surgeons perform various heart operations on adults and children. Foreign patients come here to perform coronary artery bypass surgery (78% of surgeries per 1,000 appeals) and heart valve replacement (22% for congenital abnormalities in adult patients). The coronary artery bypass mortality rate in the cardiac surgery department is less than 1% (this rate varies between 1-3% in the developed world). The risk of infection is lower than the world average.
At the Antalya Memorial, rhythm disturbances (atrial fibrillation), which often require mitral valve surgery, are corrected using radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This method is quite complex and requires a high level of training and professionalism from surgeons, so it is only applied in a few centers in Turkey.
RADIATION ONCOLOGY AT THE ANTALYA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Antalya Memorial provides cancer treatment using state-of-the-art systems. They use TrueBeam STx and Elekta Versa Signature HD linear accelerators. This technology targets cancer cells with high doses of radiation without damaging healthy tissue. This results in a reduced duration of exposure to radiation and a higher accuracy of the beam.
The Department of Interventional Radiology offers the patients painless treatment options under local anesthesia. These procedures include endermic ablation, cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, intraarterial chemotherapy, chemoembolism (TAKE), radioembolism, chemosaturation, and palliative care.
